Moe Aung (Burmese: မိုးအောင်; pronounced [mò áuɴ]) is a Burmese naval officer who serves as the current Commander-in-Chief of the Myanmar Navy, holding the rank of admiral.[1][2][3][4][5][6][7][8] Following the 2021 Myanmar coup d'état, Moe Aung was appointed as the commander-in-chief of the Myanmar Navy, succeeding Admiral Tin Aung San, who became a member of the State Administration Council (SAC), the military junta.[9][10][11][12][13][14][15] In January 2024, he was also appointed as National Security Advisor on the State Administration Council, while his chief of staff, Zwe Win Myint, assumed the role of commander-in-chief of the Myanmar Navy.[16][17][18][19][20][21][22]

Military career[edit]

Moe Aung graduated from the 28th intake of the Defence Services Academy.[23][24][25][26][27] On 20 February 2023, the European Union (EU) imposed sanctions on Moe Aung for human rights violations and undermining democracy and rule of law in the country.[28][29][30][31][32][33][34][35]

On 8 January 2024, he was appointed as National Security Advisor on the State Administration Council (SAC) succeeding Lieutenant General Yar Pyae.[36][37][38][39][40][41] Chairman of the SAC, Min Aung Hlaing reportedly favoured him for his success procuring submarines and arranging officer training exercises in India and Russia.[42][43][44] Moe Aung's chief of staff Zwe Win Myint became the succeeding commander-in-chief of the Myanmar Navy.[16][45][46][47][48][49][50]

Personal life[edit]

Moe Aung is married to Aye Khine Nyunt.[51] His father Aung Thaung was a high-ranking Burmese military officer.[52][53][54][55][56][57] The Aung Thaung family has significant business interests in the country, including United Amara Bank.[58][59][60][61][62][63][64]

Moe Aung is also on the boards of directors Myanma Economic Holdings Limited (MEHL) and Myanmar Economic Corporation (MEC), both military-owned conglomerates that the European Union sanctioned in February 2022 for their involvement in atrocities and human rights violations.[16][65][66][67][68][69][70]
